The City of Worcester

- a FairTrade City!

Volunteers are celebrating after three years of hard work has seen Worcester awarded the title of Fairtrade City. Worcester Fairtrade Network has spent the past three years campaigning and holding promotional events across the city such as the Fairtrade Fortnight to try and entice the city’s businesses, cafes and restaurants to stock Fairtrade products. Their hard work paid off as 18 shops, 17 caterers and 41 community organisations now offer the goods leading the Fairtrade Foundation in London to accept the application submitted by the network. Members of Worcester Trade Justice Network hosted an evening to celebrate the city gaining the status at The Guildhall on Tuesday, July 25 2006 attended by the Mayor of Worcester and invited guests. However, Worcester Trade Justice Network do not want to stop there and will continue campaigning to encourage everyone living or working in the city to become a supporter of Fairtrade. “Yes, the City of Worcester has met the minimum requirements but there is still a long way to go, wouldn’t it be fantastic if everywhere offered Fairtrade products,” said a spokesman for Worcester Trade Justice Network. The Fairtrade mark guarantees that overseas farmers have been offered a fair and stable market price for their products, which in turn gives them and their workers a higher quality of life. Anyone who would like more information or wishes to get involved with the network should call Anthony Wood on 01905 351025 or Barrie Jenks on 01905 779904.
